In the first part of the Clinical Staff Competency section, care that is provided to specific populations can be defined by age, by gender, or by a particular disease or condition. The requirements for population-specific care are not listed but rather inferred in broad categories within The Joint Commission (TJC) standards. Each healthcare organization is to define their own population for which care is defined. These modules provide an overview of population-specific care that is defined according to age.

Meeting the Requirements for Population-Specific/Age-Related Care
In this course, you will be provided with an overview of population-specific care that is defined according to age. You will review guidelines for delivering age-related care, how various healthcare departments are impacted by age-related requirements and explain how staff competency is verified to deliver care to different populations and patients of different ages.
Age-Specific Competency - Care of the Adolescent Patient
In this course, you will learn about the developmental guidelines for the adolescent patient, defined as a person from 12 to 19 years of age. These guidelines help healthcare professionals adapt care to incorporate normal growth and development, to ensure a safe environment for the adolescent patient and to ensure the patient receives the best care possible.
Age-Specific Competency - Care of the Adult Patient
In this course, you will learn about age-specific guidelines for the adult patient, defined as a person from 20 to 64 years of age. These guidelines help healthcare professionals adjust patient care by incorporating the patient's age, comprehension and maturity level for the best care possible in a safe environment for the adult patient.
Age-Specific Competency - Care of the Geriatric Patient
In this course, you will learn about age-specific guidelines for the geriatric patient, defined as a person 65 years of age and older. The need for "age appropriate" care is apparent in this population. Therefore, these guidelines can help healthcare professionals adjust patient care to ensure these patients receive the best care possible.
Age-Specific Competency - Newborns through Infancy
In this course, patient care providers working with newborns will learn about normal growth and development patterns of this age-specific group. Care providers will be able to recognize normal patterns of developmental behavior, summarize the needs for each of the ages provided and understand ways to help them develop if they are faced with an illness or hospitalization.
Age-Specific Competency - Care of the Pediatric Patient
In this course, the healthcare provider will learn about developmental changes and summarize different techniques to provide age-appropriate care to the pediatric patient, defined as a child of 18 months to 11 years of age.
Restraint or Seclusion Part I
The use of restraint or seclusion can pose an inherent risk to the physical safety and psychological well-being of patients and staff. In this course, you will learn the definitions of restraint and seclusion, the types of restraints and their risks, safe and alternative uses to restraint or seclusion, patient rights, and restraint and seclusion orders. To prevent the potential for abuse, each healthcare organization should check its specific state laws and regulations governing restraint or seclusion, and then follow the strictest regulation to ensure safety while maintaining patients' dignity and avoiding inappropriate use of restraint or seclusion.
Restraint or Seclusion Part II
Part II of the Restraint or Seclusion course continues to focus on areas of assessment, monitoring and evaluation of a patient in restraint or seclusion, face-to-face evaluation, documentation, staff education, performance improvement and reporting in case of death. The purpose of the standards and regulations regarding restraint or seclusion is to ensure that these methods are used appropriately, as infrequently as possible, and only when less restrictive methods are considered and are not feasible.
Review of TJC Standards for Restraint or Seclusion Use - BHC Settings
The Joint Commission's (TJC) Behavioral Health Care (BHC) standards for restraint and seclusion apply to any use of restraint and seclusion for behavioral health purposes. In this course, you will learn about TJC's BHC standards that apply to all behavioral healthcare settings. Restraint and seclusion are essential to protect patients from harming themselves, other patients and staff, or to allow necessary treatments or therapies to proceed. The strictest law and regulation, whether it is state or The Joint Commission, should be followed by the healthcare organization, as applicable.
Ethics of Healthcare
Ethical behavior affects patient care, staffing, competency of healthcare providers, organizational decisions regarding costs and access to healthcare. In this course, you will be able to define ethics, name the four (4) principles used to make ethical decisions, recognize healthcare situations that may cause ethical dilemmas and analyze what can be done when such a situation occurs.
Basics of Healthcare Ethics
All healthcare workers, including non-clinical staff, have responsibility in healthcare ethics. Whatever the situation, the goal is to provide safe, quality, and equal care to all patients in the most respectful manner as possible. In this course, the non-clinical healthcare worker will be able to under the basics of ethics in the work environment, define ethics, name principles used to make ethical decisions, recognize healthcare situations that may cause ethical dilemmas and analyze what can be done when such a situation occurs.
