    Assistive Devices (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to describe the importance of independence to residents and to other people; be able to explain that independence can mean doing all or some self care tasks and list at least three of those tasks; explain how assistive devices are chosen to help individual residents to be more independent; and describe the role of the nursing assistant in helping residents to be more independent.
    Residents with Special Problems (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify six (6) barriers to effective communication; list the methods for improving communication with hearing, visual, and cognitively impaired residents; list common types of hearing, visual, and cognitive impairments among the elderly, as well as explain their symptoms and effects.
    Bowel and Bladder Management (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify the effects of incontinence on the residen; demonstrate what assistance can be offered to the incontinent resident; and list the three (3) incontinence training programs
    Oral Hygiene (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify the results of poor oral hygiene; demonstrate the proper procedures for assisting in oral care to residents who are able/unable to care for themselves; demonstrate the proper procedures for cleaning dentures; and list some basic steps to maintain healthy teeth.
    Infection Control and Universal Precautions (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to demonstrate the proper technique for hand hygiene; identify when handwashing should occur; list the three (3) essential rules for following universal precautions; and identify at least six (6) ways that infections can be spread.
    Resident Rights: Privacy (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify resident rights requirements for personal privacy; list four (4) types of personal privacy; and define the job of an ombudsman.
    Resident Rights: Confidentiality (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to define the term confidentiality; identify the resident rights requirements for confidentiality; list the different types of confidential information; and list three (3) methods to protect confidential resident information.
    Skin Management: Preventing Pressure Ulcers (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify identify pressure ulcers; list the signs that indicate potential risk for pressure ulcers and what causes them; identify high-risk residents; and demonstrate preventative measures for pressure ulcers.
    Resident Assessment/Care Planning (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to list the four (4) general types of observation; define and list five (5) examples of ADLs; identify the nursing assistant's role in assessing a resident; demonstrate the ability to locate resident information from the MDS assessment form; and identify the required contents in a plan of care.
    Nutritional Needs (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify the importance of mealtimes to residents; demonstrate the proper procedures for serving a resident in their room; and demonstrate the proper procedures for feeding a resident.
    Restraint-Free Environment (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to define the term restraint and understand its use, according to the new Federal requirements; list at least six (6) types of restraints; identify the required steps that must be taken prior to applying a restraint; list at least seven (7) ways to help prevent residents from falling; and demonstrate what to do if a resident falls.
    Tobacco and Smoking (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to list the effects of tobacco smoke on the body; the risks faced by a non-smoker in a smoking environment; the consequences of smoking and the benefits of not smoking; and discuss why it is difficult to stop smoking.
    Disaster Preparedness (Ver 1)
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to state procedures to follow in the event of a fire or other internal disaster; and state procedures to follow in the event of a natural disaster
    Managing Behavior
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify five (5) influences of behavior; demonstrate eleven types of behavior and their associated behavior management interventions; demonstrate four (4) professional codes of conduct; and list six (6) types of abuse and give examples of each.
    Improving Observation and Reporting Skills
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to emphasize the need for complete and accurate records as operating legal documents; state ten (10) charting principles; describe the difference between objective and subjective observations; and list seven (7) occasions requiring charting.
    Survey Process
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify four (4) common types of surveys; list the twelve tasks of the federally-mandated survey process; and identify the nursing assistant's role in the survey process.
    Isolation Precautions
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to define communicable disease and isolation; identify the isolation precaution categories by color and required protective wear; and demonstrate the procedures for wearing and discarding protective gowns and gloves.
    The Choking Resident
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to list five (5) things that could cause a resident to choke; demonstrate the proper procedure for dislodging articles stuck in the throat (Heimlich maneuver); and demonstrate the proper procedure for caring for the unconscious person.
    Psychosocial Aspects of Aging
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify five (5) losses that the elderly experience when moving into a nursing home; list three (3) signs of depression; list five (5) ways to help residents adjust to life in a nursing home; and identify ten (10) reality orientation techniques.
    Developing Effective Relationships
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to list and discuss the two (2) forms of communication; identify the role of the sender, the message, and the receiver of all communication; explain communication barriers; demonstrate several ways to improve your communication skills; and perform an objective test on individual abilities and traits.
    Social and Recreational Needs
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to list the three (3) basic types of needs; identify the five (5) stages of Maslow's hierarchy of needs; list at least five (5) ways to accommodate resident's needs; identify five (5) benefits of recreational activities; and list three (3) ways to meet the social needs of residents.
    Positioning and Lifting
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to demonstrate correct posture; list the four (4) positions used to position a resident; and list five (5) ways to lift and/or reposition a resident.
    Nursing Care: Stroke
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify symptoms of a stroke; list three (3) steps that you should follow when encountering someone who is experiencing a stroke; and describe five (5) general areas of care that will require additional attention.
    Nursing Care: Diabetes
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to define the term diabetes and list three (3) associated risk factors; identify the appropriate proportions of a diabetic's diet; list the four (4) golden rules of exercise for a diabetic; identify at least five (5) daily preventative care techniques for diabetic residents; and accurately demonstrate measuring blood sugar.
    Environmental Safety
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify three(3) primary methods for promoting environmental safety; list at least ten (10) environmental hazards and its means of prevention; identify five (5) ways infections can be spread; list five (5) ways to prevent fires; and demonstrate the ability to locate potential sources of environmental hazards.
    Residents’ Personal Property
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to identify the importance of respect for a resident's personal property; list the procedures for inventorying the new resident's personal articles; and explain the standard procedures for identifying articles that have been lost or stolen.
    Incident Reporting
    This lesson will provide the student with the necessary information to define the term incident report; identify six (6) skills needed while reporting incidents; list at least eight (8) parts of an incident report; and demonstrate the accurate completion of an incident report
